These come with great waterproofing, but also light weight, cushioned, and flexible right out of the box. No need for Dr. Scholl's here. Been on multiple off-road German hill hikes and about to go through a 3 day hike through the Alps in July 2013 (lightweight is the key for maneuverability) in mountain terrain.

Before these I bought a pair of Columbia Ridge 2 hiking boots for $50 thinking Columbia only made awesome outdoor products... I was wrong. dont waste your time on the Ridge model line. They are solidly built but seem to be built for a robot's foot (ripped the skin off my ankles in 15 minutes). Also I saw some other "no name" boots with the exact same tread and overall design as the Ridge models, just rebranded. Stay away from anything rebranded (GMC, Chevy, Buick, Saturn, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, government bail-out) Never buy the bottom lowest priced option of even the best brand, usually means bargain materials and low "quality assurance" even though they are made in the same Vietnamese factory as the awesome Shasta boots.

Recommendation on shopping for shoe bargains with quality, look at the rock bottom models, then look $20 above that for the best bang for your buck with best quality and comfort. I call it the sweet spot.
