Product Description
The Celestial 55° is the adaptable, go-to bag for summer when the temperatures fluctuate. The insulation on one side is for cool evenings, and the poly-cotton sheet on the other side is for warmer ones.Kelty Celestial 55 Degree Rectangular Synthetic Sleeping Bag Review
For the money, this is an excellent bag for warm weather camping. It is surprisingly light and compact, rolling up into a loose bundle approximately 6" in diameter (but easy to squish down to about 3" or 4" in diameter if tied up with a cord or pack straps). The reason it packs so well is that the "bottom" of the bag is really only a heavy sheet, while the top is a thicker, lightly-stuffed, synthetic-lofted layer. In 55-degree-F temperatures, you sleep with the thicker, synthetic-lofted layer up to hold in body heat and keep you warm; however, you will also need a sleeping pad to insulate you from the ground since the "bottom" of the bag is only a sheet. In that configuration, it is quite cozy, though campers who tend to get cold easily may also want to don a pair of wool socks and a stocking cap to increase the perceived warmth. (Comfort and temperature ratings are highly subjective, after all.)
In 70-degree-F (or warmer) temperatures, turn the bag over so the sheet side is up. The thicker, synthetic-lofted layer under you should suffice to insulate you from the ground (though you may still desire a sleeping pad for added comfort), while the sheet side is just thick enough to keep off a chill in the air. If you tend to sleep hot, you can also open the foot box to let in air or stick out your feet (yet keep the side zipped, if you wish) thanks to the dual zipper.
This is a no frills but nice quality rectangular sleeping bag that is very packable and very versatile. The synthetic fill will keep you warm in moderate temperatures, even if it gets wet. The full-length dual zipper will allow the entire bag to be unzipped for use as a blanket (half of the "blanket" will be the synthetic-filled top and half will be the lighter, sheet-like bottom). If you're an "active sleeper," there is a velcro tab to keep the bag zipped shut and prevent it from opening unintentionally. The included stuff sack is generously oversized, making it very easy to put this bag away. In fact, those wanting to enhance packability will likely want to purchase a smaller, tighter stuff sack or dispense with the sack in favor of tying it up into a tighter bundle with cord or nylon straps. The materials used in the bag seem like a good compromise between durability and weight. At $40, it is an extremely good deal. The construction (stitching, materials, etc.) is substantially better in quality than most bags that typically retail in this price range.
A quick note about size... I am 6'0" tall and weigh approximately 190lbs. This bag fits me nicely. It covers my body from my toes up to my neck, and has a little wiggle room around my shoulders. While not incredibly spacious, it is not annoyingly constrictive either. It's just right.
